Cocoa Beach has the relaxed Florida energy people often hope to find and sometimes miss. It is close enough to Orlando to make the drive easy, but once we arrived, it still felt like a genuine beach town rather than a manufactured resort district.

Downtown was compact and walkable. The restaurants felt local. People lingered outside with their dogs. Nothing required a complicated itinerary or a heroic parking strategy—and that alone deserves a small round of applause.

Most importantly, bringing Hollywood did not feel like an inconvenience we had to manage. With the right location and timing, he fit naturally into the weekend.

The Morning Rhythm We Loved

Our favorite part of the trip was also the simplest. We would leash up Hollywood, walk for coffee, and head toward the beach before the day became busy.

The Downtown Event We Did Not Plan

One of the best parts of the weekend was completely unplanned. We walked into Cocoa Beach Main Street’s Friday Fest, the downtown street party held on the third Friday of many months.

There was live music, food, local vendors, and the kind of easy community atmosphere that makes you stay out longer than expected. It did not feel overproduced. It felt local—which is exactly why we enjoyed it.

The Stops That Shaped Our Weekend

Foxtail became part of our morning routine because it was easy to reach on foot and gave us a natural starting point before heading toward the beach. When traveling with a dog, convenience quickly becomes luxury.

Heidi’s Jazz Club

During the downtown event, we stopped at Heidi’s Jazz Club. I ordered a raspberry martini, we found a quiet place outside, and Hollywood settled beside us while we took in the evening. It felt tucked away without feeling removed from everything happening downtown.

Jazzy’s Mainely Lobster

Lunch at Jazzy’s Mainely Lobster was casual, welcoming, and memorable for all the right reasons. We shared seafood and lobster bites, and it became one of those meals permanently attached to the memory of the trip.

The Reason We Chose Cocoa Beach

The East Coast Dog Surfing Festival was the original reason for our trip. It brought together dogs, local families, beach energy, and support for animal-welfare organizations—essentially Hollywood’s version of a major industry conference.

We began with the Wags and Waves gathering at Cocoa Beach Fish Camp Grill, where Hollywood enjoyed grilled chicken from the pup menu with the seriousness of a professional restaurant critic.

The following day, he tried his first surf lesson. Watching him balance on the board while people cheered from the beach was funny, sweet, and completely unforgettable.

Where We Stayed—and Why Location Mattered

We stayed at The Drift near South Orlando Avenue. The rental was clean, recently updated, and close enough to downtown and the dog-beach area that we could build much of the weekend around walking.

That location mattered more than an oversized resort or a long list of amenities. We could get coffee, reach the beach during the allowed hours, and enjoy downtown without repeatedly loading Hollywood into the car.
